Downtown Hong Kong Hotels

Hong Kong began in the early nineteenth century as an important port for trading. It was a British colony from 1842 until sovereign power was returned to the People's Republic of China in 1997. With Hong Kong's subtropical climate, there are many events occurring year round. Free market captialism and low taxes make this city a world financial center.

All About Hong Kong Downtown

Hong Kong is a very cultural city with many things to see and do for travelers and vacationers. It's situated on the south end of China and has over 200 islands offshore. Annual temperatures range from 18ºC to 32ºC (65ºF to 89ºF). The climate is humid subtropical.

Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese troops during the Pacific War, and after the war the British took control of Hong Kong until 1997. The British occupation greatly influenced the culture of Hong Kong and it's often described as “East meets West”. Today, travelers will see many influences of these two cultures.

Downtown Hong Kong has a highly developed public transportation system that will easily take you to any destination. There's a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system, buses, ferries, and taxis.

In this bustling city of over 7 million people, there's a wide range of activities and places to visit within short distances. Take a short boat tour and enjoy a view of the skyline by taking the Star Ferry, or visit Victoria Harbour where you'll see the Avenue of the Stars honoring celebrities such as Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Chow Yun Fat. Ocean Park is a popular attraction which takes at least a half-day to full-day to tour. This world class Aquatic theme park has outstanding aquariums, panda feedings, dolphin shows, crocodiles, and much more. Be prepared to do a lot of walking.

Another full-day excursion would be a visit to Hong Kong's Disneyland. Always a magical place to visit and although it's a smaller version of Disneyland, this park is complete with Disney Princesses, Space Mountain, and a fireworks display at night.

If you want to relax from downtown Hong Kong's hustle and bustle, there's a unique place amidst the tall skyscrapers that will allow you to catch your breath. The Chi Lin Nunnery is an actual Buddhist place of worship surrounded by beautiful gardens. Bring your camera with you as you'll be delighted by the lotus pools, bonsai trees, Chinese architecture, and a vegetarian restaurant. This walking tour is free and will take about two hours to complete including a visit of the nunnery.
