More About Hong Kong Airport

The Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport servicing the city of Hong Kong. It is known as the Chek Lap Kok Airport locally because that is the name of the island the airport is located on. The Hong Kong Airport opened in 1998, and has won multiple customer satisfaction award since its opening. The airport services over 40 destinations in China, and is a major hub for multiple international airlines. Air New Zealand, Qantas and Virgin Airlines all have major operations running in the Hong Kong International Airport. Over 45 million passengers come through the Hong Kong airport, which makes it the 13th busiest airport in the world. 90 airlines fly out of the airport to over 150 cities around the world.

As of June 2010, there are development plans to dramatically expand the airport. The latest development plan is set to run over the next 20 years and is called Master Plan 2030. Three years were taken to plan the project with nine different consulting companies helping with the decisions. The goal is improve the passenger capacity and increase the number of flights by adding a third runway to the airport. This will allow for the Hong Kong International Airport to be able to support the constantly growing Chinese population.

The Hong Kong International Airport currently has two terminals and concourses. The first terminal is the third largest airport terminal in the world behind Dubai International Airport and Bejing Capital International Airport. The second terminal was built in 2007 and features all of the passenger check-in operations for multiple airlines. There are no departing flights out of Terminal 2.

The Hong Kong International Airport is known for its passenger accommodations. There are three hotels within walking distance from the airport including a Marriott and Regal. Multiple bus and rail lines constantly run to and from the airport. This makes traveling in the city very easy for tourists. The airport is also known for its convenient and simple layout. Combining the layout with the moving walkways means that the airport is easy to get around despite its large size.
