The stadium opened in 1953 as 28,000-seat Government Stadium before undergoing renovation in 1994.
The stadium was the host site for the 1997 and 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens as well as the rugby sevens and soccer competitions of the 2009 East Asian Games. In 2008, Hong Kong Stadium played host to the Bledisloe Cup, a rugby union contest between the national teams of Australia and New Zealand.
Premier international friendly soccer games have also been played here.
