Victoria Park Hotels

Located North of the Hong Kong Central Library, Victoria Park is a public park named after Queen Victoria. The Park is the venue for many fairs, protests, and even television broadcasts. The park has lawn, a swimming pool, ponds for remote controlled boats, and several tennis courts including the Tennis Central Court where many international tennis competitions are held.

Hong Kong's Green Paradise

Spreading over 17 hectares on Causeway Bay, Victoria Park is the largest and most popular green space in Hong Kong. The former typhoon shelter harbored yachts and fishing boats during typhoon seasons until the 1950s, when it was made over into a park. The green space was named after Britain’s Queen Victoria, whose statue dominates the main entrance to the park. This statue, along with several others, was taken to Japan during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. Restored to the park in 1952, it serves as a popular gathering place. Victoria Park itself is a starting point for political demonstrations, including the June 4 commemoration of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Many visitors enjoy early walks in the park on weekday mornings when they can watch seas of people participate in the graceful motions of tai chi. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s outdoor swimming pool, skating rink, bowling green, children’s area and various sports facilities. The park’s main tennis court seats over 3,500 spectators and hosts several international tournaments, including the Hong Kong Tennis Classic and the Hong Kong Open. A small fee is charged for use of the swimming pool and tennis courts.

Festivals and special events attract huge numbers of people to the park. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year, thousands of celebrants congregate to enjoy the festivities. The park transforms into a glorious mass of blooms for the Hong Kong Flower Show, which runs for 10 days in March. Hundreds of thousands of flowers fill the park, where visitors may enjoy landscape displays and purchase gardening supplies and souvenirs. The Mid-Autumn Festival occurs in September or early October, when the moon is at its fullest. Families flock to the park, carrying lanterns and candles, to eat moon cakes and enjoy the beauty of the full moon.

Getting to the park is not a problem since it lies next to the popular Causeway Bay district. The efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR) carries visitors to the Causeway Bay MTR station or Tin Hau station. The park is also accessible by dozens of bus routes and trams.
